Heathcote is known as a serious producer of shiraz which is suited to the dry and hot summer climate, cool overnight temperatures and the ancient red cambrian soils. The soil is derived from the decomposition of the cambrian volcanic basalt that dates back more than 500 million years. While vineyards first appeared in the region in the 1860's, the commercialisation of Heathcote wines starting taking shape in the early 1970's. Shiraz has been the dominant variety but is making way for more medieteranean varieties.
